A formulation used (for over six centuries) for beginning many traditional stories in English. (Stories which will, for the most part, see the hero and/or heroine ‘live happily ever after’ at the other end.) Other languages around the world have equivalent formulations. Such phrases are used with particular regularity for fairy tales.
