Emotional discharge whereby the subject liberates himself from the affect attached to the memory of traumatic event in such a way that this affect is not able to become (or to remain) pathogenic. Abreaction may be provoked in the course of psychotherapy, especially under hypnosis and produce a cathartic effect. It may also come about spontaneously, either a short or a long interval after the original trauma.

This notion of abreaction has a long history in the Freudian canon, dating back to Freud’s collaboration with Josef Breuer during the mid 1880s, and rising to conceptual status with their development of the hypno-cathartic method for the treatment of hysteria.

Descarga emocional, por medio de la cual un individuo se libera del afecto ligado al recuerdo de un acontecimiento traumático, lo que evita que éste se convierta en patógeno o siga siéndolo. La abreacción puede ser provocada en el curso de la psicoterapia, especialmente bajo hipnosis, dando lugar a una catarsis; pero también puede producirse de forma espontánea, separada del trauma inicial por un intervalo más o menos prolongado.
