A point group is a group of symmetry operations all of which leave at least one point unmoved. A crystallographic point group is a point group that maps a point lattice onto itself: in three dimensions the symmetry operations of these groups are restricted to 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 1¯, 2¯ (= m), 3¯, 4¯, 6¯ respectively.

La notación mm2 indica que la simetría del grupo puntual consiste en dos planos perpendiculares y un eje binario en su intersección, paralelo a c. Esta simetría determina los parámetros angulares de la red, 𝛂 = 𝛃 = 𝛄 = 90°, y no introduce ninguna limitación en los parámetros a, b, c, y por lo tanto a ≠ b ≠ c.
