Second sub-category of attribution, involving formulations in which, via the semantics of the framer employed, there is an explicit distancing of the authorial voice from the attributed material. It is most typically realised by means of the reporting verb, 'to claim' and by certain uses of ‘scare’ quotes.

The centre-left news reporters resort to a different tactic, which is to more frequently distance themselves from the words and thoughts of those whom they are reporting, which, we argue, disaligns the reporter’s voice with the reported voice, and thus is also an aligning strategy with the readership.
