The heart and the arterial system are anatomically and functionally connected, although they are frequently studied as separate structures with independent functions. The arterial tree does not act solely as mere conduits for blood flow distribution to the organs but it also modulates the ventricular ejection, transforming the pulsatile stroke volume (SV) into a peripheral continuous flow (essential for metabolic exchange), and maintaining blood pressure (BP) during diastole (necessary for coronary perfusion).

En realidad, el sistema cardiovascular es más eficiente cuando el corazón y el sistema arterial trabajan a la par. En otras palabras, el ventrículo y el sistema arterial necesitan bailar al mismo ritmo. La cupla ventriculoarterial es el resultado de la modulación continua de la distensibilidad y la resistencia del sistema arterial con respecto al rendimiento del ventrículo izquierdo (VI) durante la sístole, y este proceso fisiológico es fundamental para mantener un volumen sistólico y un volumen minuto adecuados.
