The second section of the aorta following the ascending aorta that gives off the brachiocephalic trunk, which supply blood to the right arm and the right side of the neck and head, and the left common carotid and subclavian arteries, the second and third branches off the aortic arch which perform parallel functions on the left side.

In this study, we evaluated the WSS, flow velocity and OSI of the aortic arch in patients with an aortic arch pathology, such as an ascending aorta aneurysm, and/or an AAE. We used CFD to calculate the haemodynamic parameters and made a 3D movie of the pulsatile flow. Furthermore, the localization of the WSS, flow velocity and OSI of the aortic arch was estimated and compared with the likely site for aortic dissection. According to the autopsy studies an intimal tear is usually transverse and involves more than half of the circumference. The likely site for an intimal tear is located 1–3 cm distal to the coronary artery orifice and the descending aorta just distal to the left subclavian artery.

Aunque la forma de presentación más frecuente representa una estenosis aislada, la obstrucción puede llegar hasta la hipoplasia o incluso la interrupción del arco aórtico, asociándose a diferentes enfermedades congénitas más complejas. Los avances en el tratamiento médico en las formas más severas, así como el desarrollo de las técnicas quirúrgicas y percutáneas, permiten en el momento actual manejar esta afección con excelentes resultados y baja morbimortalidad.
