Las autoridades sanitarias de algunos países, los libros de texto de galénica y numerosos profesionales sanitarios privilegian hoy día el uso del término jeringa frente al de jeringuilla. Esta segunda denominación parece haber sufrido cierto descrédito por la asociación inmediata que hoy establecen muchos entre jeringuilla y drogadicción.
